SPECIAL INTERESTS

INTERNAL DISC DISRUPTION
Internal Disc Disruption
Lower back pain is a leading cause of chronic pain, and is most commonly caused, in about 40% of cases, by internal disc disruption (IDD). IDD results in discogenic pain, i.e. pain from within the spinal disc, which may also radiate into the lower limbs causing pain or numbness.
IDD is Dr Moolman’s special interest, as it is a highly common and troublesome condition which impacts patients’ mobility and quality of life. It is also ever-changing, which can make diagnosis elusive.
Through extensive, ongoing research Dr Moolman aims to define IDD more accurately as a specific condition, to enable more accurate diagnosis by clinicians and the most appropriate treatment for patients. Dr Moolman’s research has enabled him to identify the most effective evaluation and treatment methods, limiting the need for invasive diagnostic procedures and surgery.
Watch: Dr Moolman explains internal disc disruption, the causes and how it works, and how he identifies and treats the condition.

SPORTS INJURIES AND CHIROPRACTIC
Sports Injuries and Chiropractic
Dr Moolman has a special interest and long experience in managing sports injuries and rehabilitation, stemming from his lifelong involvement in different sporting codes and having played provincial rugby.
Repetitive sports such as golf, tennis and hockey have different effects on the body, compared to an impact sport such as rugby, and thus result in different types of spinal strain and injury specific to each sport.
The evaluation, mechanical advice and chiropractic adjustment thus varies from one sporting code and type of injury to the next. Dr Moolman has a special interest, and specialist expertise, in how chiropractic treatment can help treat injuries for athletes from diverse sporting codes.

THE LINK BETWEEN AGE AND THE CAUSE OF BACK PAIN
The Link Between Age and the Cause of Back Pain
By the age of 30, and into the 40s, research shows that there is a 70% probability that back pain is discogenic, emanating from within the spinal disc due to internal disc disruption (IDD).
However, in patients from age 55 onwards, the incidence of IDD as the cause of pain decreases, and back pain is most likely joint-based, stemming from the facet or sacroiliac joints.
Dr Moolman’s research and interest in the link between age and the probability of specific spinal conditions, enables him to select the type of treatment and adjustment best suited to different ages. Further mechanical and postural advice also differs relative to age.
